What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique empowers people to change the underlying habits which are at the core of pain or reduced performance in their everyday activities. It works by improving the student’s movement, balance and coordination. It enables students to re-learn  the most effective and effortless way to move, stand, sit, and be in one’s body. The Alexander Technique helps people discover a new balance of mind and body by releasing unnecessary tension and improving performance in every activity. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting, and everything else we do each day.

Alexander technique teachers are called teachers because they teach a skill rather than give a treatment.  The technique has a therapeutic component but the main aim of the teacher using their hands is to guide the student in order that they may learn more quickly. The result is that the student learns skills they can take into their daily life and become independent of the teacher.
